Ant Canyon Dispersed Area

Sierra Way, Kernville, CA

Ant Canyon is a free, dispersed camping area along the upper Kern River just north of Goldledge Campground, reached from Sierra Way outside Kernville, California, in Sequoia National Forest. Rather than numbered campsites, campers park in a small lot and carry gear down a short, rocky path to open ground between the road and the riverbank, and the turnoff is easy to miss without watching for the sign. There are no developed facilities here: no running water, no showers, no hookups and no regular trash service, though portable toilets and trash bins are placed during the summer months. A campfire permit is required for any fire, stove or barbecue use, and camping or fires within twenty five feet of the water are prohibited under the river's Wild and Scenic designation.
