Black Mountain Campground sits in the shadow of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak in the eastern U.S., at 3,040 feet elevation in the Pisgah National Forest near Burnsville. The USDA Forest Service facility offers 37 primitive campsites with 3 sites including electric hookups. Each campsite includes picnic tables, tent pads, lantern posts, and campfire rings with grills. Facilities provide hot showers and restrooms with flush toilets. Campers can purchase firewood, ice, t-shirts, and souvenirs at the campground. The South Toe River borders the facility, providing opportunities for picnicking, day hiking, scenic driving, and trout fishing. Black Mountain Campground operates mid-April through October with a 14-day stay limit within 30 days. The gate is closed at 10:00 pm and reopens at 7:00 am daily. From Asheville, take I-26 west to exit 9 onto Highway 19 east towards Burnsville, then south on Highway 80 approximately 12-14 miles to Mount Mitchell Golf Course, then turn right on South Toe River Road.
