Buck Rock Lookout

Buck Rock Lookout is a restored 1923 fire lookout tower at about 8,500 feet in Sequoia National Forest near Three Rivers, still staffed by a volunteer during wildfire season. The final approach runs on rough, unpaved Forest Roads 14S11 and 13S04, recommended only for high-clearance vehicles or capable adventure motorcycles; the last 2.5 miles are the roughest stretch, and the road dead-ends at the base of the lookout. From there, reaching the cab itself means climbing 172 steep steps to a narrow catwalk deck, so it isn't a stop for a street bike or low-clearance rig, and the forest roads are impassable in winter and spring snowpack. Buck Rock is open to visitors for day use only, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during fire season, and can close without notice for fire activity or weather; there is no overnight public lodging and no water or trash service on site. On clear days the views stretch to the Mount Whitney area and the San Joaquin Valley, making it a worthwhile detour for adventure riders equipped for the rough road, but not a stop for standard street motorcycles or an overnight base.
