Camp 4
Yosemite National Park, CA
Camp 4 is Yosemite National Park's walk-in, tent-only campground on the north side of Yosemite Valley, at the base of the cliffs near Yosemite Falls. It has no vehicle camping: visitors park separately, 100 to 300 yards away, and carry their gear in. The 61 sites (25 in winter) work on a shared model, with up to six unrelated people assigned to each site's fire ring, picnic table, and bear-proof food locker, at a rate of $8 per person per night.
Camp 4 is on the National Register of Historic Places for its role as home base to pioneering rock climbers like Royal Robbins and Yvon Chouinard in the 1950s and 60s, and it remains a gathering point for climbers today. Reservations are required about a week in advance from spring through fall; from November into spring it runs first-come, first-served with self-registration on arrival.
