What is a cattle guard? A cattle guard is a grid of parallel steel bars set into the road at a fence line, spaced so livestock will not walk across it. For a rider it is a short stretch of hard metal with gaps in it, and it is slick when wet, frosty, or dusty. The standard approach is to cross upright, straight, at a steady speed, with no braking or steering input on the bars.
