What is chip seal? Chip seal is a resurfacing method where a layer of asphalt binder is sprayed onto the road and loose stone is spread over the top, then rolled in. While it is fresh, riders deal with loose gravel that is thrown by traffic and piles at the edges; once it has settled it grips well but is coarse and noisy. Fresh chip seal is a common reason a favorite route is temporarily worth avoiding.
