What are crash bars? Crash bars are tubular guards that stand off the frame to keep the engine, bodywork, and the rider's leg off the pavement in a tip-over. They are also called engine guards or highway bars. They are not a promise that a bike survives a crash undamaged — the job is limiting damage in the low-speed drops that happen in gravel lots and on soft shoulders.
