Grays Meadows Campground

Grays Meadow Campground sits on Onion Valley Road about six miles west of Independence, California, in the Inyo National Forest, at an elevation of roughly 6,100 feet between Mount Williamson and Mount Whitney, the tallest peaks in the contiguous United States. The campground splits into Lower Grays Meadow, with 52 sites near Independence Creek, and Upper Grays Meadow, with about 35 additional sites, and all sites can accommodate RVs, trailers, or tents. Anglers fish Independence Creek directly from camp, and the Onion Valley trailhead at the end of the road climbs into the Sierra over Kearsarge Pass into Kings Canyon National Park. About 31 sites can be reserved on Recreation.gov, with the rest first-come, first-served; the campground is typically open from late April through mid-October, with nightly fees around $34 plus an extra-vehicle charge.
