Hydroplaning

Hydroplaning is when standing water builds up faster than the tire can push it aside, so the tire rides up on the water film and loses contact with the road.

What is hydroplaning? Hydroplaning is when standing water builds up faster than the tire can push it aside, so the tire rides up on the water film and loses contact with the road. Steering and braking go with it until the tire touches down again. Worn tread, higher speed, and deeper water all make it more likely, which is why riders slow down for standing water, avoid the pooled tracks where car tires run, and stay off the brakes and throttle if the bike goes light.
