California State Route 96, the Klamath River Highway, runs 62 miles from Happy Camp northeast toward I-5, following canyons carved by the river. Extremely low-traffic sections create a private-road sensation. The curves follow natural river terrain, delivering endless sweeping turns.
Remote riding through Klamath National Forest and Siskiyou County at relatively low elevation compared to Sierra passes. Pavement quality remains excellent with good grip. Elevation ranges from 1,500 to 3,000 feet.
Services and fuel are extremely limited; Happy Camp and remote stops are the only reliable options. Summer months offer ideal conditions; winter weather occasionally closes sections or creates hazardous pavement.
