Mezcalería Tobalá

Mezcaleria Tobala is a small mezcal only bar tucked upstairs above Whisler's on East 6th Street in Austin, reached by an outside staircase through the courtyard. The back bar is built entirely around wild and cultivated agave varietals, including Mexicano, Madre Cuixe, Arroqueño, Tobalá, Tepextate, Jabali, Pechuga, and Espadin, poured by bartenders who walk guests through the differences between them. The room is tiny and the hours are limited, running Wednesday through Saturday evenings, so it works best as a deliberate late stop rather than a walk in default on an East Austin bar crawl. Traditional orange slices with salt and spice come alongside the pours, and the space sits directly above Whisler's, so both bars can be worked in a single stop.
