Thermal, CA
Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area is a California State Parks off-highway vehicle area spanning roughly 85,000 acres of desert terrain in eastern San Diego and western Imperial counties, reached via Highway 78 between Julian and Highway 86. Operated by the OHMVR Division, it is open to motorcycles, ATVs, four-wheel-drive vehicles and dune buggies year-round.
The park contains more than 1,200 miles of trails across desert terrain ranging from below sea level to about 400 feet in elevation, adjacent to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Camping is permitted throughout the unit at no charge, with vault toilets, shade ramadas, picnic tables and fire rings provided in the Quarry, Main Street and Holmes Camp areas, though drinking water is not available on-site.
