Mulholland Highway's 2.4-mile section known as The Snake cuts through the Santa Monica Mountains between Kanan and Sierra Creek Roads. After nearly seven years of closure due to the 2018 Woolsey Fire, the Snake reopened in December 2025. Narrow pavement and steep canyon walls create an enclosed environment. Blind curves demand respectful speed.
The full Mulholland Highway extends 32.4 miles through the Santa Monica Mountains from Calabasas to Malibu. The Snake section represents the most technically demanding portion. Afternoon weekend traffic builds; early morning rides provide optimal conditions.
