Westgard Pass

California State Route 168 connects Big Pine to Nevada at Westgard Pass, climbing 38 miles through narrow canyon terrain with tight technical switchbacks. The route ascends into the White Mountains and ancient bristlecone forest. Pavement narrows in sections, requiring precise line choice through hairpin turns. Elevation change from Big Pine at 3,900 feet creates sustained climbing with little flat terrain. Canyon walls close in significantly, creating a confined environment. Alpine forest transitions progressively with landscape shifting from desert to mixed conifer stands. Services are limited; Big Pine provides the last fuel and food. The route remains open year-round in most sections, though winter snow causes seasonal closures. Traffic remains minimal.
