Badlands Loop Road (South Dakota Highway 240) spans 39 miles through the eastern portion of Badlands National Park in southeastern South Dakota. The two-lane paved road runs 27 miles through Badlands National Park's North Unit with steady curves and steep passes climbing over 3,000 feet elevation. Riders encounter dramatic landscapes spanning layered rock formations, steep canyons, and towering spires created by eroded badlands geology. More than a dozen spectacular overlooks and trailheads line the route, providing views, informative displays, and access to hiking. The Ben Reifel Visitor Center offers information, maps, exhibits and the park film. Road grades are steep in sections with reduced speed limits; allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the basic route.
