Custer State Park Wildlife Loop

The Custer State Park Wildlife Loop State Scenic Byway covers 18 miles of core scenic riding through the park's wildlife viewing area, with a full loop option extending to 31 miles via Highway 16A and Highway 87. The loop winds through pine-covered hills, rolling prairies, and red-walled canyons inhabited by as many as 1,500 free-roaming bison, pronghorn, deer, elk, coyote, prairie dogs, and wild turkey. Curves are frequent with tight switchbacks and steep elevation changes making this an engaging ride. Numerous pull-offs provide viewing and photography opportunities. A $25 seven-day Custer State Park pass is required. Wildlife unpredictably uses the roadway; riders must wait for bison and other animals to cross.
