FM 170 is a 120-mile road along the Rio Grande's northern bank through Big Bend Ranch State Park between Presidio and Terlingua. The most celebrated section is 50 miles between Lajitas and Presidio with continuous elevation changes through tight canyon terrain. Hairpin curves alternate with sweeping desert vistas. Pavement is well-maintained with good grip characteristics. Elevation ranges from 2,000 to 3,500 feet with significant climbing and descending creating physical riding demands. Ideal seasons are spring (March-May) and fall (September-November) when temperatures average 70-85°F. Gas and services are extremely limited; Lajitas, Presidio, and Terlingua are the only towns. Cellular coverage is sparse. Plan this ride for full day dedication; do not rush the technical canyon sections.
