Twisted Sisters

Medina, TX

Three ranch roads through the Texas Hill Country.

100Miles
about 4 hoursRide time
Twisted Sisters is the biker name for three Farm-to-Market roads, FM 335, FM 336, and FM 337, looping roughly 100 miles through the Texas Hill Country west of San Antonio and anchored at Medina, TX. Riders typically link them through Vanderpool and Leakey to Camp Wood, crossing the Nueces River on FM 335 and the Frio River on FM 337, the longest of the three at about 56 miles between Medina and Camp Wood. One stretch of roughly 15 miles carries an estimated 65 curves as the road climbs through canyon country. Pavement is mostly in good condition but narrow, with loose gravel, low-water crossings, cattle guards (some sitting mid-curve on FM 336), and free-range livestock and deer in the road. There are no guardrails on most of the drop-offs, and several of FM 337's turns tighten mid-curve, which is where a lot of the route's reputation for wrecks comes from. Fuel and food run through Medina, Vanderpool, Leakey, and Camp Wood; outside those towns there's nothing. Spring is the usual pick, before Hill Country heat sets in; fall works too, especially near Lost Maples State Natural Area outside Vanderpool, which draws its own crowds for foliage. Run the loop out of Medina to hit FM 337's tightest sections while you're fresh, and stop in Leakey, the unofficial base for the route, for gas before tackling FM 336.
