Apache Trail

Arizona State Route 88, the Apache Trail, combines 18 miles of paved riding with 26 miles of unpaved road through the Superstition Mountains. The paved section runs from Apache Junction to Tortilla Flat, passing Canyon Lake and Goldfield Ghost Town with consistent canyon curves. Fish Creek Hill, seven miles beyond Tortilla Flat on dirt, features a 900-foot descent over 2 miles at 10-percent grade. Fuel planning is critical; gas stations disappear past Apache Junction. Canyon Lake Marina offers fuel at 15 miles, but no fuel between the marina and Tortilla Flat (population six). Goldfield Ghost Town approximately five miles from start provides historical interest. The paved section requires 3-4 hours; dirt section to Fish Creek Hill adds 2-3 hours. High-clearance or dual-sport motorcycles handle the unpaved section better, though careful street bikes can manage with reduced speed.
