Arizona State Route 147 (Hualapai Mountain Road) climbs 14.2 miles one way from Historic Route 66 in Kingman into the Hualapai Mountains. The road ascends from 4,984 feet to 8,417 feet, transitioning from desert landscape into pine and juniper forest. Curvy terrain provides continuous low-speed curves rather than switchbacks.
Vegetation changes progressively with scrub oak, prickly pear, and piñon pines dominating. Traffic becomes extremely light beyond the Interstate 40 cutoff at mile 7.3. Hualapai Mountain Park entrance occurs at mile 11.3.
A 40-minute round-trip provides quick escape from Kingman with accessible climbing. Fuel and services are available in Kingman before the climb. Winter weather can temporarily close the road. The route offers less technical difficulty than major mountain passes.
