Coronado Trail

Arizona U.S. Route 191, the Coronado Trail or Devil's Highway, traverses 123 miles from Clifton through Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest to Alpine. The route climbs from 3,500 feet to nearly 9,000 feet, dropping through multiple 2,000-plus-foot elevation swings. Published curve counts range from 427 to over 600 turns with hairpin sections requiring 15 mph. Sheer cliffs with no guardrails line many sections; fallen rocks occasionally appear in lanes. The landscape transitions from pinyon-juniper through ponderosa pine to mixed-conifer forest. The Bear Wallow Cafe in Alpine provides stops. Services are extremely limited between Morenci and Alpine. Plan fuel stops in Clifton, Morenci, or Alpine before the pass. Winter snow closures affect higher elevation. Fall and spring are optimal. Not recommended for beginning riders.
