Beeline Highway

Arizona State Route 87, the Beeline Highway, climbs 76 miles from Fountain Hills northward to Payson. The route ascends through elevation zones from desert scrub into chaparral and finally ponderosa pine forest. The pavement delivers sweeping mountain curves with the massive forest rim visible and dense conifer forest covering the terrain. Elevation gain exceeds 4,000 feet from Phoenix valley floor (approximately 1,100 feet) to Payson (approximately 5,400 feet). The curves remain consistent without extreme technical difficulty, making it accessible to a wider range of riders. Two-lane sections require standard attention to oncoming traffic. Payson at the terminus offers lodging and restaurants. Fuel stops occur at Fountain Hills and scattered points during ascent. Spring through fall offers best riding; occasional winter snow closures occur above 5,000 feet.
