Berthoud Pass

Berthoud Pass sits at 11,307 feet on U.S. Highway 40, traversing the Continental Divide between Empire (east) and Winter Park (west). The pass features 6.3%-grade inclines and switchbacks making the drive physically challenging. The road is well-maintained, paved, and equipped with guard rails throughout. Discovered in 1861, the pass provides the fastest access to Winter Park from Denver. Surrounding terrain features vast Continental Divide landscape with rushing waterfalls and dramatic peaks. Ascent proceeds through forested slopes to high alpine environment. Road surface quality is excellent with minimal debris and good grip characteristics. Riders experience significant altitude effects and dramatic temperature changes. Remains open year-round but can experience severe weather closures. The pass serves as a gateway between Denver Front Range and central Colorado mountains.
