Independence Pass (Colorado Highway 82) is the second-highest paved pass in Colorado at 12,095 feet on the Continental Divide in the Sawatch Range. The pass spans nearly 40 miles between Aspen and Twin Lakes, with both approaches featuring dense forest at lower elevations transitioning to endless switchbacks. The Twin Lakes route is shorter and more exhilarating, while the Aspen side is longer with narrower single-lane sections governed by stoplights.
The road is narrow and winding with steep inclines, drop-offs, and tight curves. Road surface is well-maintained with guard rails on most exposed sections. The pass closes October-May due to winter conditions. Riders must bring extra layers for rapid temperature changes at altitude. Advanced skill is required due to sustained technical demands.
Close coordination with weather and seasonal opening/closing is essential before riding.
