The pass features the steepest continuously paved grade in Colorado at 9.8% on the north side. Despite the grade, Highway 149 over Slumgullion and Spring Creek Passes is relatively accessible with many tight turns but consistent pavement. Road surface is well-maintained and plowed regularly with occasional weather closures. The byway offers high-elevation mountain views, alpine wildlife viewing opportunities, and access to Gunnison National Forest. Multiple scenic pullouts allow riders to rest and appreciate the Continental Divide crossing. The landscape transitions from forested slopes to sparse alpine vegetation. Remain open year-round. The byway offers excellent stops for rest and scenic photography.
