The Million Dollar Highway is a legendary 25-mile section of U.S. Route 550 between Ouray and Silverton defined by hairpin switchbacks, dramatic cliff-side views, and sections with no guardrails. The route climbs through Red Mountain Pass and Molas Pass, with elevation changes creating constant curves through tight switchbacks. The road is narrow, well-paved, and historically dangerous in winter due to steep 8% grades. Silverton (elevation 9,318 feet) is the only fuel stop between Ouray and Durango. Speed advisory signs mark numerous turns; following posted recommendations is essential. The pavement is consistent with minimal debris but exposed drop-offs on numerous sections. Allow 2+ hours for the 25-mile section. Weather changes rapidly at altitude. Ride with full focus and plan multiple pull-over stops for both rest and photography.
