Four Peaks Road

Four Peaks Road (Forest Road 143) runs 28 miles one way from State Route 87 into the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The road climbs from 2,600 feet to 6,100 feet through ribbon-like curves. The first five miles traverse saguaro-studded desert before elevation accelerates. A scenic overlook at 5.2 miles provides valley views; tight turns at 10.8 miles signal increasing difficulty. Sweeping curves dominate until final climbing sections with tight switchbacks. Return via State Route 188 creates a 56-mile round-trip loop in 2-3 hours. Elevation changes create temperature variations from desert to alpine forest. No fuel or food exist along the route. Fall through spring offers best conditions; summer heat and monsoon weather affect riding. The route remains lightly traveled.
