McKenzie Highway (OR-242) is 37 miles of dramatic volcanic landscape with incredible black lava flow fields and high alpine pine trees surviving in a sanitized landscape. Following an 1860s wagon route from the junction of OR-126 west of Belknap Springs to Sisters, the route features sharp curves with gravel sliding off hillsides onto inside corners during the ascent. The western side features more twists and turns than the eastern approach. The steep descent to Belknap Hot Springs includes switchbacks through dense, verdant Cascadian forests. An observation point at the summit features lava and basalt rock construction with peak identifications and hiking trail access. Pavement quality is excellent due to minimal traffic. The road only opens seasonally due to elevation and winter snow, typically mid-June through October.
