Mingus Mountain Pass

Arizona State Route 89A connects Sedona, Jerome, and Prescott via the historic Mingus Mountain section, a 19.7-mile pass with 47 miles of continuous curves. The descent from Mingus summit into Jerome drops approximately 2,000 feet through hairpin turns with published 20 mph recommendations. The route climbs through pine forest exceeding 7,000 feet before descending into Jerome. The Mingus section features extreme grades exceeding 11 percent and hairpin turns demanding precision. The full US-89A totals 83.85 miles with Verde Valley sections offering less technical riding. Prescott through Jerome to Sedona covers approximately 50 miles of continuous curves. Services cluster in Jerome, Sedona, and Prescott. Occasional winter closures occur. Summer offers ideal conditions; afternoon monsoon storms develop. The road is paved throughout.
