Mount Lemmon Road
Tucson, AZ
30 miles climbing from Tucson desert to 9,171-foot summit with constant curves.
Mount Lemmon Road, also called Catalina Highway Scenic Drive, climbs 30 miles from Tucson's 2,400 feet to the summit at 9,171 feet. The route features very few straight sections; curves dominate throughout. The road exhibits a consistent 10-percent maximum grade with excellent grip on dry surfaces.
Elevation changes create dramatic ecosystem transitions from Sonoran desert through oak woodland into alpine forest. The riding experience shifts from open desert curves into forested canyon sections. Scenic overlooks occur frequently.
Tucson provides fuel and services before the ride. No fuel or food stops exist along the climb. Summer monsoon storms develop frequently; winter snow closures occur above 7,000 feet from November through March. Spring and fall offer ideal conditions.
