Trail Ridge Road

Trail Ridge Road (U.S. Highway 34) spans 48 miles from Estes Park to Grand Lake as North America's highest continuous auto road. The route climbs from 7,522 feet to 12,183 feet at the summit, spending over 10 miles above 11,000 feet. The pavement rolls across open alpine tundra with no trees, no guardrails, and no shoulders—just wind, sky, and vast distances. Ascent is gradual with grades never exceeding 7%. The road crosses the Continental Divide at Milner Pass. The Alpine Visitor Center at 11,796 feet offers views and supplies. No fuel is available inside Rocky Mountain National Park. The road typically opens mid-May and closes in early October. Altitude effects impact bike performance and rider endurance. Allow 2-3 hours at moderate speeds. Monitor weather closely; altitude and wind can deteriorate conditions rapidly.
