Vail Pass

Vail Pass sits at 10,662 feet on Interstate 70 in central Colorado between Vail and Copper Mountain. The pass represents one of North America's highest Interstate crossings and offers panoramic views of the Gore Range and Tenmile Ranges. While riding on I-70 differs from traditional mountain curves, the pass features sufficient twisting at Interstate speeds to demand rider attention, particularly during wind. Pavement is consistently well-maintained and the pass remains open year-round. Vail Pass is the only pass in Colorado with paved bike paths on both sides of the mountain. It yields only to Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnels 28 miles to the east as the second-highest highway pass in the U.S. Surrounding terrain features forested slopes transitioning to alpine tundra. Altitude effects on bike performance are present. Alternate bikes paths are available for non-motorized users.
