Wind River Road spans 36 miles through Gifford Pinchot National Forest with lush scenery featuring trees lining both sides. The route is accessible from two points: approximately 47 miles east of Vancouver, WA via Highway 14 (southern access), or from the town of Randle where Highways 131 and 12 meet (northern access). The northern access usually closes during winter due to snow. The very well-maintained pavement has very few potholes, offering tight twists and longer sweepers suitable for spirited riding. Curves feature excellent engineering with no surprises. One or two curves have a small cafe or fuel stop. Mount St Helens viewpoint is accessible from the northern section. Swift Reservoir sits at the eastern terminus. Ape Caves are accessible via a 15-mile extension on Forest Road 90.
