ATGATT
ATGATT stands for "all the gear, all the time" — the practice of wearing full protective kit on every ride, not just the long ones.
Adventure Bike
An adventure bike is a larger dual-purpose motorcycle built for long-distance travel on and off pavement.
Ape Hangers
Ape hangers are tall handlebars that put the grips at or above shoulder height, so the rider's arms reach up — the posture the name is making fun of.
Bagger

Battery Tender
A battery tender is a smart maintenance charger that keeps a parked motorcycle's battery topped up over long idle periods.
Bike Night
A bike night is a recurring evening gathering — most often weekly — where riders park up at a bar, restaurant, or shop that welcomes them.
Bobber
A bobber is a custom style built by subtracting: fenders cut down or "bobbed", a solo seat, and anything not needed for riding removed.
CE-Rated Armor
CE-rated armor is motorcycle impact protection tested against a European standard, fitted at shoulders, elbows, knees, and back.
Cafe Racer
A cafe racer is a stripped-down motorcycle style with low handlebars, a solo seat, and minimal bodywork.
Cattle Guard
A cattle guard is a grid of parallel steel bars set into the road at a fence line, spaced so livestock will not walk across it.
Chain Slack
Chain slack is the free play in a chain-drive motorcycle's drive chain, measured as vertical movement at a specified point on the lower run.
Chicken Strips
Chicken strips are the unused bands of tread at the outer edges of a motorcycle tire, left because the rider has not leaned the bike far enough to reach them.
Chip Seal
Chip seal is a resurfacing method where a layer of asphalt binder is sprayed onto the road and loose stone is spread over the top, then rolled in.
Chopper
A chopper is a heavily customized motorcycle with an extended, raked-out front end, a stretched frame, and bodywork cut back to almost nothing.
Clip-Ons
Clip-ons are handlebars in two separate halves that clamp directly onto the fork tubes instead of onto a single bar across the triple clamp.
Cold Tire Pressure
Cold tire pressure is the pressure measured before the bike has been ridden, when the tires are at ambient temperature.
Colors
Colors are the insignia a motorcycle club wears on the back of a cut, identifying the club and the wearer's standing in it.
Counter-Steering
Counter-steering is turning a motorcycle above walking pace by pressing the handlebar forward on the side you want to go.
Covering the Brake
Covering the brake means resting your fingers on the front brake lever, ready to squeeze, instead of leaving them wrapped around the grip.
Crash Bars
Crash bars are tubular guards that stand off the frame to keep the engine, bodywork, and the rider's leg off the pavement in a tip-over.
Cruiser
A cruiser is a motorcycle with a relaxed, feet-forward riding position and an engine tuned for low-rpm pull.
Cut
A cut is the sleeveless vest a rider wears as the carrier for their patches.
DOT-Approved Helmet
A DOT-approved helmet is certified by its manufacturer as meeting the United States federal motorcycle helmet standard.
Decreasing-Radius Turn
A decreasing-radius turn is a corner that keeps tightening as it goes, so the lean angle that felt right at the entry is not enough by the exit.
Dresser
A dresser is a touring motorcycle wearing the full touring package — fairing, hard saddlebags, a top case, and the comfort hardware that goes with long days.
Dual-Sport
A dual-sport is a street-legal motorcycle built to ride both pavement and dirt, with long-travel suspension and high ground clearance.
Earplugs
Earplugs reduce the sustained wind noise inside a helmet at highway speed, which is a major source of rider fatigue.
Engine Braking
Engine braking is the slowing that happens when you roll off the throttle while still in gear and the engine's internal resistance drags on the drivetrain.
Fairing
A fairing is the bodywork around the front and sides of a motorcycle that pushes air around the rider instead of into them.
Floorboards
Floorboards are flat platforms fitted in place of footpegs, so the rider can move their feet around during a long ride rather than holding one position.
Fork Seals
Fork seals are the seals at the top of the fork sliders that keep the oil inside the front suspension and dirt out of it.
Friction Zone
The friction zone is the narrow band of clutch lever travel where the clutch is partly engaged — passing some power to the rear wheel but not all of it.
Full-Face Helmet
A full-face helmet is a one-piece helmet that covers the whole head including a fixed chin bar, with a face shield across the opening.
Gauntlet Gloves
Gauntlet gloves have a long cuff that extends over the jacket sleeve and cinches down, sealing the gap at the wrist.
Grooved Pavement
Grooved pavement is a road surface cut with lengthwise grooves — usually a work zone where the old surface has been milled off before repaving.
Half Helmet
A half helmet covers the top of the head only, leaving the face, jaw, and usually the ears exposed.
Head Check
A head check is turning your head to look directly at the space beside and behind you before changing lanes — an actual look, not a glance in the mirror.
Highway Pegs
Highway pegs are forward-mounted footpegs that let a rider stretch out their legs on long straight stretches.
Hydroplaning
Hydroplaning is when standing water builds up faster than the tire can push it aside, so the tire rides up on the water film and loses contact with the road.
Lane Filtering
Lane filtering is moving between lanes of stopped or very slow traffic, typically to reach the front at a red light.
Lane Position
Lane position is where in the lane a rider chooses to ride, adjusted for visibility, escape routes, and road surface.
Lane Splitting
Lane splitting is riding a motorcycle between two lanes of traffic travelling the same direction, passing vehicles that are moving more slowly than the rider.
Late Apex
A late apex is turning in later than the geometric middle of the corner, so the point where you come closest to the inside edge sits farther around the bend.
Leathers
Leathers are motorcycle jackets, pants, or one-piece suits made of thick abrasion-resistant leather.
MSF Course
An MSF course is Motorcycle Safety Foundation rider training combining classroom instruction with hands-on practice on a closed range.
Mesh Jacket
A mesh jacket is a riding jacket built with large ventilated panels so air moves through it, which is why it is the standard hot-weather choice in the South.
Modular Helmet
A modular helmet is a full-face-style helmet whose chin bar and shield flip up so the front can be opened at a stop.
Naked Bike
A naked bike is a street motorcycle without full bodywork — the engine and frame are left exposed and the rider sits upright behind wide handlebars.
Poker Run
A poker run is an organized ride with several checkpoints along the route where each rider draws a playing card; at the finish the best poker hand wins a prize.
Preload
Preload is the suspension adjustment that sets how much a spring is compressed before riding, matching the bike to the load it carries.
Rally
A rally is a multi-day motorcycle event that draws riders to a town or region, built around organized rides, vendors, music, and the crowd itself.
Rev Matching
Rev matching is blipping the throttle during a downshift so engine speed comes up to meet the lower gear before the clutch is released.
Riding Boots
Riding boots are over-the-ankle motorcycle boots with ankle support, grippy oil-resistant soles, and a reinforced shift pad.
Road Captain
A road captain is the rider who plans, briefs, and leads a group ride and sets its pace.
Rumble Strips
Rumble strips are the milled grooves cut into the edge line or centerline of a road to wake a drifting driver.
Saddlebags
Saddlebags are the luggage mounted on either side of the rear wheel.
Sissy Bar
A sissy bar is the upright bar behind the passenger seat, usually padded as a backrest.
Sport Bike
A sport bike is a performance-oriented motorcycle with a forward-leaning riding position, a high-revving engine, and bodywork shaped for speed.
Squid
Squid is derisive slang for a rider who rides aggressively while wearing little or no protective gear — the shorts-and-sneakers wheelie rider is the stereotype.
Staggered Formation
Staggered formation is a group riding arrangement where riders alternate sides of the lane, each offset behind the one ahead.
Swap Meet
A swap meet is a market where riders and vendors buy, sell, and trade motorcycle parts, tools, and gear.

A tour pack is the top case mounted behind the passenger seat on a touring motorcycle, usually with a backrest on its front face.
Touring Bike
A touring bike is a motorcycle built for long-distance travel, with weather protection, hard luggage, and a comfortable two-up seat.
Trail Braking
Trail braking is carrying some brake pressure past the point where you turn into a corner, then easing it off progressively as lean angle builds.

A trike is a three-wheeled motorcycle that does not have to be balanced at a stop.
Twisties
The twisties are any stretch of road with a sustained run of curves — the part of the map riders plan whole days around.

Riding two-up means carrying a passenger.
Vanishing Point
The vanishing point is the farthest place ahead where the two edges of the road appear to meet.
